{"id":8,"date":"2012-09-10T18:57:51","date_gmt":"2012-09-10T18:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brettjpeterson.com\/blog\/?p=8"},"modified":"2012-09-10T18:57:51","modified_gmt":"2012-09-10T18:57:51","slug":"physical-interactivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brettjpeterson.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/10\/physical-interactivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical interactivity?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I really enjoyed both readings on interactivity and the current and future states of interactive design ( chapters 1 &amp; 2 from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Art-Interactive-Design-Illuminating\/dp\/1886411840\">The Art of Interactive Design<\/a> and \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worrydream.com\/ABriefRantOnTheFutureOfInteractionDesign\/\">A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design<\/a> ) Both pieces encouraged me to think about what interactivity really is and what makes\u00a0a good interaction.<br \/>\n<strong>How would I define physical interaction?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I do agree, for the most part, with Chris Crawford&#8217;s assessment that Interactivity\u00a0centers on the three actions of <em>Listening<\/em>, <em>Thinking<\/em> and <em>Speaking<\/em> (or input,\u00a0process, and output). So physical interaction or interactivity, to me, would\u00a0be to replace l<em>istening<\/em> and <em>speaking<\/em> with some sort of mechanical motion and a\u00a0response in kind. I&#8217;m reminded of Newton&#8217;s 3rd law of physics, the law of\u00a0reciprocity; if I push a box, the box pushes back on me. I think that a large differentiator between good and bad\u00a0interactivity would be the matching of the response to the action.<\/p>\n<p>I think a poor example of this would be an interaction of the phone in my pocket. If I\u00a0press and hold my finger down, a small motor inside the phone vibrates. This doesn&#8217;t mirror the effect of a real object.
